Social Media Set Up in Mauritius: Do It Right

Social Media Set Up in Mauritius: Do It Right

Two years. That’s how long a client of mine — she runs a boutique in Curepipe — had her social media “set up” before she came to me. Facebook page, Instagram account, WhatsApp Business number. Looked fine from the outside. But the Facebook page had no cover photo, the Instagram bio was completely blank, and the WhatsApp number wasn’t connected to anything useful. Zero enquiries. Two years.

That’s what a rushed social media set up looks like.

What a Proper Social Media Set Up Actually Involves

Most business owners in Mauritius treat social media like a box to tick. Create a page, upload a photo, start posting. Done. Move on.

But here’s my honest take: a real social media set up is a foundation — and if the foundation is shaky, everything you post on top of it is just noise. Here’s what a proper setup actually includes:

  1. Choosing the right platforms — A law firm in Ebene has completely different needs than a restaurant in Grand Baie. You don’t need to be everywhere. You need to be where your customers actually are. Full stop.
  2. Setting up Business accounts, not personal ones — Instagram and Facebook both have Business account types. These give you insights, contact buttons, and the ability to run ads. Honestly? Most businesses I audit are still on personal accounts and don’t even know it.
  3. Filling out your profile completely — Your logo, properly sized and not blurry or cropped weirdly. A branded cover photo. A bio that includes contact details and tells people what to do next. Your website link, location, opening hours. All of it.
  4. Connecting Facebook Business Manager — This is the backend that lets you manage pages, run ads, and add team members properly. Most businesses skip this entirely… and then wonder why they can’t run ads when they’re ready.
  5. Linking your platforms together — Instagram connected to your Facebook Page, WhatsApp Business set up with your business name, your Google Business Profile claimed and kept up to date.
  6. Having a content plan before you post anything — Know what you’re posting, how often, and what you want people to actually do after they see it.

Why Getting the Setup Right Actually Matters

I work with businesses across Mauritius every week — restaurants, hotels, boutiques, accountants, law firms. And the same pattern comes up constantly: months of posting with nothing to show for it.

The problem is almost never the content. It’s the foundation.

An incomplete profile makes people distrust you before they’ve read a single word. A personal account limits what you can see and do. Pages not connected to Business Manager mean you can’t run ads properly when the time comes. And a missing website link? Most customers who hit a dead end won’t go searching — they’ll just move on to the next option. That’s a client you lost without ever knowing it.

A solid social media set up is the difference between a page that looks like a side project and one that actually works like a business tool. And in a small market like Mauritius, that gap matters more than people think.

How Long Does a Proper Setup Take?

When I do this for a client — say, a guesthouse in Flic en Flac or a professional services firm in Port Louis — a full setup takes a solid day of focused work.

Auditing what’s already there. Fixing or rebuilding accounts. Designing profile and cover photos. Writing the bio. Connecting everything. Putting a basic content plan in place before the first post goes out.

It’s not something to rush. Because a rushed setup means going back six months later to fix it — and by then you’ve wasted real time posting to a page that was never going to perform.

Can You Do Your Own Social Media Set Up?

Yes — and if you’re just starting out, I’d actually encourage you to understand the basics. But there’s a real gap between having accounts and having a setup that brings you actual clients.

When businesses try to do their own social media set up, here’s what usually gets missed:

  • Setting up personal accounts instead of business accounts
  • Skipping Facebook Business Manager entirely
  • Uploading a blurry or incorrectly cropped logo
  • Writing a bio that says nothing useful — or leaving it blank altogether
  • Forgetting to link Instagram to their Facebook Page
  • Not adding a contact button or website link

Each of these seems small on its own. But together? They add up to a page that looks unfinished — and that quietly costs you clients every single week.

Your Social Media Set Up Checklist

Run through this and see where your pages actually stand:

  • Business account on all platforms — not a personal profile
  • Logo uploaded as profile photo, correctly sized and not blurry
  • Branded cover photo on your Facebook Page
  • Complete bio with contact details and a clear call to action
  • Website link added to every profile
  • Facebook Business Manager connected to your Page
  • Instagram linked to your Facebook Page
  • WhatsApp Business set up with your business name and hours
  • Google Business Profile claimed and kept up to date
  • Content plan in place before your first post went out

If you’re ticking fewer than seven of those, your setup needs attention. And that’s probably where your missing results are hiding.

The bottom line: getting on social media is easy. Getting set up in a way that actually brings you enquiries takes more thought, more time, and more technical know-how than most business owners expect. If your pages have been live for months and nothing is coming in — stop looking at your content first. Look at your foundation.
