5 Social Media Mistakes Businesses in Mauritius Make

5 Social Media Mistakes Businesses in Mauritius Make

Last week, I was scrolling through the Facebook page of a restaurant in Grand Baie. Beautiful food. Great reviews on TripAdvisor. Packed on weekends. But their social media? Completely dead. Last post was from January. No replies to comments. A blurry logo as the cover photo.

And honestly — they’re not alone. I see the same social media mistakes in Mauritius over and over, from hotels in Flic en Flac to law firms in Ebene to boutiques in Quatre Bornes. But here’s the thing: every single one is fixable. I’ve seen businesses double their engagement in a month just by sorting out two or three of these.

So here are the five biggest ones I keep running into — and what to do instead.

1. Posting Without a Plan

This is the big one. Someone on the team posts whenever they “feel like it” — maybe Monday, maybe next Thursday, maybe not at all for three weeks. No schedule. No strategy.

Here’s why that kills you: algorithms reward consistency. Post three times one week, disappear for two weeks, and Facebook basically stops showing your stuff to anyone. You become invisible.

The fix: Pick three days a week. Monday, Wednesday, Friday — whatever works. Set a reminder on your phone and stick to it for 30 days. You don’t need to post every day. You just need to show up regularly. That’s it.

2. Talking About Yourself Instead of Your Customer

I see this constantly. A boutique in Port Louis posts “We have new arrivals!” A hotel posts “We are proud to announce our renovation.” An accountant posts “We offer tax filing services.”

Nobody cares. Harsh — but true.

People scroll for themselves. For entertainment, for answers, for something that speaks to their life. Your content needs to be about them.

The fix: Flip every post. Instead of “We have new arrivals,” try “Date night this weekend? Here are 3 outfits under Rs 3,000 that’ll turn heads.” Instead of “We offer tax filing,” try “Self-employed in Mauritius? Here’s the #1 mistake people make with MRA filings.”

Same business, same service — but now the customer sees themselves in it.

3. Ignoring Comments and DMs

A potential client comments: “How much is this?” or “Do you deliver to Curepipe?” And then… nothing. No reply for three days. Or worse — never.

That person moved on in 10 minutes. Found a competitor who actually replied. You just lost a sale because nobody was watching the inbox.

Social media marketing in Mauritius isn’t just about posting. It’s about responding. And Facebook shows your response time publicly — if it says “Usually responds in 2 days,” that’s basically telling customers to go elsewhere.

The fix: Turn on notifications for your business page. Reply within one hour during business hours. If you can’t manage it yourself, assign someone. A fast reply beats a perfect post every time.

4. Using Poor Quality Photos and Videos

You don’t need a photographer. But you need decent lighting and a steady hand.

I’ve seen restaurants post dark, blurry photos of food that make a Rs 800 steak look like yesterday’s leftovers. Hotels posting pixelated screenshots instead of actual room photos. It kills trust instantly. People eat with their eyes first — especially on social media.

Your phone is good enough. Seriously. Just follow a few basics:

  1. Natural light — shoot near a window or outside. Never use flash for food or products.
  2. Wipe the lens — sounds silly but it makes a massive difference.
  3. Steady your hand — lean your elbows on the table. No shaky shots.
  4. Simple backgrounds — clean table, plain wall. Don’t let clutter steal the show.
  5. Edit lightly — bump up brightness, add a bit of contrast. Instagram’s built-in editor is fine. Go easy on the filters though.

One restaurant I work with in Flic en Flac started posting bright, clean photos of their daily specials. Engagement tripled in two weeks. No ad spend. Just better photos.

5. Not Using Video — Especially Reels

If you’re still only posting static images in 2026, you’re leaving serious reach on the table. Instagram and Facebook in Mauritius are pushing video hard. Reels get 2-3x more reach than regular posts. That’s not my opinion — that’s what the numbers say.

And I know — “I’m not comfortable on camera.” You don’t have to be. Some of the best-performing videos I’ve seen from local businesses are dead simple:

  • A 15-second clip of a chef plating a dish
  • A quick walkthrough of your shop with text overlay
  • A before-and-after of a project — works brilliantly for contractors, salons, interior designers
  • A staff member answering one common customer question

No editing software needed. Record on your phone, add a caption in the app, post. Start with one Reel a week and build from there.

The One Thing That Ties All of This Together

Every one of these mistakes comes back to the same thing: treating social media as an afterthought. Something you do when you remember. But it’s not a billboard you put up and forget — it’s a conversation.

The businesses winning online in Mauritius right now — whether it’s a guesthouse in Tamarin or a clothing brand in Quatre Bornes — are the ones showing up consistently, talking to their audience instead of at them, and putting a bit of effort into their content.

You don’t need a massive budget. You don’t need a marketing degree. A plan, a phone, and 30 minutes a day. That’s the starting point.

If you’re not sure where to begin or want a second pair of eyes on your social media strategy, that’s exactly what we do at Beyond Digital. We’ve helped dozens of Mauritian businesses turn their social media from a ghost town into something that actually brings in clients.
