Why Does TikTok Pay in Mauritius Differently Than Other Countries?
TikTok runs several separate monetisation programmes globally, and each has its own rules. Here’s how they actually break down for us:
- TikTok Creator Fund / Creator Rewards Program — TikTok’s direct per-view payment. Requires 10,000+ followers, 100,000+ views in 30 days, and residency in an eligible country. Mauritius is not eligible. That’s the hard no.
- TikTok LIVE Gifts — Viewers send virtual coins during live streams, which you convert to real money. This one is available in more countries than the Creator Fund. Check your own TikTok settings — if LIVE Gifts is enabled for you, you may be able to access it from Mauritius.
- TikTok Shop Affiliate — Commissions from promoting products via TikTok Shop. TikTok Shop isn’t available in Mauritius yet, so this one’s off the table for now.
Honestly? Even if Mauritius was eligible for the Creator Fund — I’m not sure it would matter much. The rates are laughable. We’re talking USD 0.02–0.04 per 1,000 views. A video with 200,000 views earns you roughly Rs 400. That is not a business. That’s not even a decent lunch in Grand Baie.
How Mauritian Creators Actually Earn Money on TikTok
The creators and business owners I work with here who are genuinely making money on TikTok aren’t sitting around waiting for TikTok to write them a cheque. They use TikTok as the channel — and earn through what they sell, or who pays them to show up.
Here’s what’s actually working right now:
- Brand sponsorships — A local creator with 15,000–25,000 engaged followers can charge brands Rs 5,000–Rs 25,000 per sponsored video. Hotels along the west coast, boutiques in Port Louis, food brands, beauty companies — they are paying TikTok creators. And this scales. The bigger and more engaged your audience, the more you can charge.
- Promoting your own business — This is the big one. The one most people overlook completely. A restaurant in Flic en Flac showing their daily catch gets actual bookings. A hair salon in Rose Hill posting before-and-afters fills appointments weeks out. TikTok pays you indirectly — by bringing customers straight to your door.
- International affiliate programmes — Programmes like Amazon Associates or Booking.com accept Mauritian affiliates and pay via PayPal or bank transfer. If your content appeals to an international audience, this is a real income stream worth exploring.
- Selling digital products or services — Coaches, consultants, accountants, personal trainers — anyone who sells knowledge or expertise can use TikTok to find clients. One video that reaches the right 5,000 people can bring three new clients worth Rs 15,000 each. That beats any Creator Fund payout, anywhere in the world.
- Driving traffic to your website or WhatsApp — Your bio link points somewhere. If your content is useful and consistent, people click. And those clicks — to your booking page, your product catalogue, your WhatsApp number — convert into real sales.
What Kind of Earnings Are Realistic in Mauritius?
Let me be straight with you. A creator in Mauritius with 10,000–20,000 genuine followers in a clear niche — food, fitness, travel, finance, fashion — can realistically earn Rs 5,000–Rs 30,000 per month from brand collaborations alone, once they’ve built relationships with local brands. Some earn significantly more than that.
A business owner using TikTok to promote their own services? The return can be far higher — because every Rs 0 spent on content can bring in clients worth thousands of rupees.
So does TikTok pay in Mauritius? Not through the Creator Fund — that door is closed. But through brand deals, your own business, and a clear content strategy, TikTok can generate real, meaningful income. Often more than what the Creator Fund pays creators in eligible countries anyway.
Should Mauritius Business Owners Bother with TikTok in 2026?
Yes. Without hesitation.
And I’ll go further than that — TikTok is the single most underused marketing tool for SMEs in Mauritius right now. The organic reach is still extraordinary. A new account with 300 followers can get 40,000 views on one well-made video. That kind of free exposure simply doesn’t exist on Facebook or Instagram anymore.
